Some wineries make excellent wine. A very few wineries change history. Catena Zapata belongs to the second category.

When Nicolás Catena Zapata began his ambitious programme of high-altitude vineyard research in the late 1980s — inspired by visits to California’s Napa Valley and Burgundy — Argentine wine was largely unknown outside South America. By the time the world had tasted his wines, everything had changed. Catena Zapata did not just produce great Malbec; it created a global market for Argentine wine that did not exist before.

History and Heritage

The story begins in 1902, when Nicola Catena — an Italian immigrant from the Marche region — planted his first vines in Mendoza’s Agrelo area. The family winery grew steadily over the following decades, selling wine mainly to the domestic market.

The transformation came in the third generation, under Nicolás Catena Zapata. After studying economics at UC Berkeley and experiencing the world’s great wine regions firsthand, Nicolás returned to Mendoza determined to produce wines that could compete internationally. He planted vines at unprecedented altitudes, hired international consultants, and invested heavily in modern winemaking technology.

The results were immediately celebrated. By the mid-1990s, Catena Zapata wines were receiving scores of 90+ from Robert Parker and appearing on the wine lists of the world’s finest restaurants.

The Winery Building

The winery’s current building, opened in 2001, is one of the most architecturally striking in the wine world. Designed to resemble a pre-Columbian Mayan pyramid, the structure rises dramatically from the surrounding vineyards with a commanding presence. The design is not merely aesthetic — it serves practical functions, with the stepped structure allowing gravity-fed winemaking and natural temperature regulation.

Inside, the winery is a blend of modern functionality and dramatic spaces. The barrel room, housed in the pyramid’s lower levels, creates a cathedral-like atmosphere with its vaulted stone walls and thousands of aging barrels. Tours of the facility are educational and visually spectacular.

The Wines

Catena Zapata produces wines across several tiers, each reflecting a different expression of Mendoza terroir:

Adrianna Vineyard Wines

The Adrianna Vineyard, planted at 1,450 metres in the Gualtallary sub-zone of the Uco Valley, is widely considered one of the finest vineyard sites in the Southern Hemisphere. Wines from this vineyard — including the celebrated White Bones Chardonnay and River Stones Malbec — regularly appear on international lists of the world’s best wines. They are produced in tiny quantities and command significant prices.

Nicolas Catena Zapata

The flagship blended wine — a Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec blend — is the bodega’s definitive statement. Named after the founder’s grandfather, it combines power with elegance in a style that has been compared to classified Bordeaux. Production is limited to exceptional vintages only.

Catena Alta

This prestige single-vineyard range represents excellent value at its price point, offering wines of genuine complexity and aging potential. The Alta Malbec Historic Rows, sourced from pre-phylloxera vines planted in the 1930s, is a revelation of intensity and complexity.

Catena (Classic Range)

The entry-level Catena Malbec is one of the best-value wines in the world at its price point — consistent, expressive, and a perfect introduction to the house style.

Visiting Catena Zapata: What to Expect

Visits must be booked in advance, and this is not a bodega for walk-ins. The standard tour includes a guided walk through the vineyards, a visit to the production facilities and barrel room, and a seated tasting of four to six wines in a beautifully appointed tasting room with views of the Andes.

Premium experiences include vertical tastings of the Adrianna Vineyard wines, private tours with the winemaker, and exclusive barrel-room lunches. These experiences require booking months in advance and carry significant costs, but for serious wine lovers, they represent a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

Our Verdict

Catena Zapata earns its legendary status on every visit. The wines are excellent across all price points, the winery experience is polished and educational, and the historical significance of this estate is hard to overstate. This is a mandatory stop on any Mendoza wine itinerary.
