Best Time to Visit Mendoza Wineries: A Month-by-Month Guide

Timing your Mendoza visit correctly can make the difference between a good trip and an extraordinary one. This month-by-month guide covers weather, harvest timing, festivals, and crowds — everything you need to choose the perfect travel window.

One of the most common questions we receive from readers planning their first Mendoza wine trip is a simple one: when should I go? The honest answer is that Mendoza is worth visiting at any time of year, but each season offers a genuinely different experience. Here is what to expect in each month.

January

The heart of the southern summer. Mendoza city temperatures regularly exceed 35°C, making midday activities uncomfortable. However, the higher-altitude Uco Valley wineries are more pleasant. January brings the beginning of the pre-harvest period, when the grapes are approaching full ripeness and the vineyards are at their most lush. Busy with domestic Argentine tourists on summer holidays.

February

Still very hot, but the harvest begins in earnest at lower elevations. This is when the winery atmosphere becomes electric — trucks arriving with fruit, the smell of fermenting wine drifting across the estates, and an infectious energy that is uniquely Mendoza. The Vendimia (harvest festival) preparations begin. Book well in advance.

March: The Peak

This is the most celebrated time to visit. The Vendimia festival — Mendoza’s annual harvest celebration, one of the largest wine festivals in South America — takes place in the first or second week of March. The harvest continues across higher-elevation vineyards. The weather begins to moderate, and the evenings are beautiful. Our top recommendation: visit during Vendimia if you can.

April: Autumn Gold

Harvest is complete at most wineries, and the vineyard rows turn spectacular shades of gold, amber, and red. The weather is ideal — warm days, cool nights, minimal humidity. Visitor numbers begin to drop from the harvest peak, making this an excellent time for slightly more relaxed winery visits. This is also when wineries begin their new vintage blending trials, and some offer special access to this process.

May–June: Quiet Season

Temperatures drop and the vines begin their winter dormancy. This is off-peak season, which means lower prices, quieter wineries, and the ability to secure reservations at estates that would be impossible during harvest. The autumn foliage is outstanding through May. Some smaller wineries reduce hours or close on weekdays. The Uco Valley can experience frost, but the major estates remain fully operational.

July–August: Winter

The coldest months, with occasional frost in the wine country. However, the Andes are spectacular under snow, and the region is popular with skiers visiting Las Leñas resort. Wine tourism slows significantly, and this period is best suited to visitors who are comfortable with cooler conditions and want a more intimate, less touristy experience.

September: Spring Awakens

The vines bud and the first green leaves emerge — one of the most beautiful sights in viticulture. Temperatures warm gradually, and the wine tourism infrastructure gears up for the new season. Excellent value with good weather and moderate crowds.

October–November: Spring Peak

Warm, sunny days with the vineyards in full leaf and flowering. This is an increasingly popular time to visit — excellent weather, good availability, and the dramatic backdrop of snow-capped Andes still visible. An excellent alternative to the harvest peak for those who cannot travel in February–March.

December: Pre-Summer

The temperatures rise and the grapes develop quickly. This is still a good time to visit — busy with early-summer tourists but not yet at peak capacity. Some wineries offer special end-of-year events and tastings.
