Harnett County Detention Center is a maximum, minimum, and medium-security correctional facility in Lillington City, Harnett County, North Carolina. It is a purely adult facility that only holds offenders above 18 years of age who have defied the state laws. The detention center is operated and run by the Harnett County Sheriff’s Department with the help of the Carolina Department of Corrections.

This 106620 square foot correctional facility was opened in the 1930s as a detention center for state inmates working for road construction projects. Most of the inmates held here have been convicted of severe crimes and are serving sentences of more than one year. The facility was initially run by the State Highway Department with just a single dormitory but was handed to the county sheriff’s department.

It is organized into pods, seven in number, with each pod having 29 dormitories and 34 single cells. Each pod features two indirect male supervision maximum-security facilities and a direct supervision medium-security facility. It also contains a maximum and minimum security facility for female offenders, a laundry area, medical pods, a kitchen, and an intake/booking area.

The pods further have respective visitation areas, multi-purpose rooms, outdoor exercise areas, and a video visitation booth. There is also a fully-operational education building, chapel, and two vocational training centers.

Inmates also receive packages such as release clothing when they are almost getting released. Moreover, they can receive publications such as newspapers, magazines, and books that have been obtained directly from a reputable vendor or publisher. The publications’ content should be clean without any obscenity.
