AI companions are easily accessible and designed to be 'like-minded' through personalization algorithms and sycophantic tendencies, eliminating the need for fringe communities or convincing others.
The study raises a red flag about AI's potential to validate harmful narratives. Unlike humans, AI can provide validation for victimhood, entitlement, or revenge without expressing concern or setting boundaries. Conspiracy theories can flourish with AI companions that help construct elaborate explanatory frameworks. This dynamic is particularly appealing to those who are lonely, socially isolated, or unable to discuss certain experiences, as AI offers a non-judgmental, emotionally responsive presence.
To address these concerns, Osler suggests implementing more sophisticated guard-railing, built-in fact-checking, and reduced sycophancy in AI systems. By minimizing errors and challenging user inputs, AI can help prevent the reinforcement of false beliefs and delusions.
