The history of wine would not be complete without mention of the contributions of the Catholic Church. The role of monks and friars is legendary but Don Bosco was a man who made his substantial mark in recent memory.
Don Bosco not only greatly influenced grape production in Argentina, he was responsible for modern agriculture in all of its forms throughout the country. In the early 1900s he was paramount in advocating specific regions for specific products. Recognizing and promoting what worked well and where.
His influence as an educator continues to this day in the guise of this sprawling working winery that is also a school. Through the good works and charities of the Catholic Church thousands have been able to obtain a superior education that encompasses much more than just wine.
For those that continue on to the oenology school there is an unparalleled opportunity for hands on training, right here on the campus. Housing the oldest cellar in Argentina, but also one of the most modern wineries, Bodegas Don Bosco gives the students the chance to create their own wines, while working together to produce the labels who’s sales help support the institution.
From one of the world’s only wine towers, a massive edifice that employs gravity throughout the wine making process, well known grape varieties are produced along side less common offerings such as Lambrusco and Friulano from Italy.
One of the most successful products is their delicious Liquoroso, a fortified and maderized wine that is widely used for Communion throughout Argentina.
